A group of five talented Sixth Form applied mathematicians from Eltham College have been selected to compete in the finals of the ‘Mathworks Math Modeling Challenge’, to be held in New York this April. This is a significant achievement for the Eltham College team, who have placed higher than any other UK team in the history of the competition.
The ‘Mathworks Math Modeling Challenge’ is a prestigious competition that attracts teams from all over the United States and the United Kingdom. It is designed to encourage students to use mathematical modelling to solve real-world problems, and this year’s challenge focused on the optimization of traffic flow.
The Eltham College team has spent countless hours analysing traffic patterns, identifying inefficiencies, and developing innovative solutions to improve traffic flow. Their hard work has paid off, as they have been selected to compete for one of three technical computing awards.
The team will have the opportunity to present their work to an expert panel of judges at the headquarters of Jane Street Capital, a leading quantitative trading firm. This will be a fantastic opportunity for the students to showcase their mathematical abilities and gain valuable experience presenting their work to a professional audience.
The team’s success also highlights the importance of encouraging and supporting students to pursue their passions and interests, particularly in the STEM fields.
We wish Oles, Atharv, Ben, Alice, and Ethan the best of luck in the competition!
