Black Culture Celebration Week at Eltham College

This week, we celebrated Black Culture Celebration Week with a variety of activities and events aimed at fostering understanding and pride in Black culture and history.

Several workshops and talks took place at our Senior School, including sessions with Jenny Okolo on reclaiming Black narratives, cultural identity, and mental health. Highlights included a popular Zumba class, a gospel singing workshop, and a discussion on gospel music by OE Anjola Ogundeji. Students also enjoyed a Race from Africa to the Caribbean and an inspiring poetry workshop about the works of  Benjamin Zephaniah.

Throughout the week, themed lunches and a cultural map project gathered information on the diverse heritage of the Eltham College community, creating an atmosphere of pride and connection, and celebrating the richness of Black culture.

Mrs Bilby, Head of Wellbeing, says “It has been wonderful to see students from all year groups joining in with such enthusiasm. This week has been a really joyful experience for everyone involved and has enabled the community to come together in celebration of Black culture.”
