Folk Music Concert 2024
On Saturday 23rd November, the Music Department put on its first ‘flagship’ concert of the year; the Folk Music Concert at St Alfege Church, Greenwich. Following the success of last year’s Early Music Concert, the theme this year was the intriguing, varied world of Folk Music, and allowed for an incredibly diverse programme including works by Janáček, Sibelius, Grieg and Vaughan Williams. A number of our ensembles performed, including College Choir, Sinfonia, Eltham Brass, Chamber Choir and the Symphony Orchestra, and the concert finished with a performance of a new composition from our Director of Music, Mr Johns, an arrangement of a number of Scottish folk songs for choir and orchestra involving nearly 150 pupils.
Mr Johns commented that ‘the standard of playing on display all evening was remarkable; our pupils continue to up the bar in every one of our major concerts, and are performing at a level that would be expected of county youth orchestras/bands and upwards. The sense of energy in the church was amazing, and it really was a ‘proper concert’ rather than just a ‘school concert’.
The Music Department now turns its attention to the Senior School production of Chicago this week, and then our carol services and the end-of-term Christmas Cracker Concert to round of a busy, but highly successful, term.
