The first round of the National track and field cup saw 54 Eltham College students take to Sutcliffe Park to compete in Junior Boys, Intermediate Boys, Junior Girls and Intermediate Boys category’s.
A full day of competition with over 400 students involved across the borough, saw each and every student take on a track & field event competing at the highest level. Individual brilliance would be reflected in the overall team score in each category with the aim to progress to the next round as a team.
Each student performed superbly in the blistering heat as the summer competition season started with a bang and first on the podium was India (Y9) winning the Discus shortly followed by Tom (Y10) romping home in the 300m. Track success in the morning session continued with Romit (Y9) Hurdling into 1st place and Alex (Y9) stepping up with a PB of 24.44 in the 200m to win by a distance.
The afternoon session saw Eltham College rack up 8 further 1st place finishes as Year 10 Javelin star, Kyveli, registered her PB on the way to gold, Tessa (Y9) made light work of the 100m and Leo (Y8) leapt to perfection in the High Jump.
Late afternoon saw the gold medals continue to flow as Tom (Y8) rattled the 300m, Ralph (Y8) glided home in the 200m and Monty (Y8) triumphed in the 800m, much to the joy of the gathering crowd.
Moment of the day was the 1500m in the Junior boys event. As the final 200m was entered, Nathan and Aaron (Y8) were neck and neck, one would take 1st, the other 2nd. The race continued to the final strides as the twins matched each other pace for pace. Aaron would cross the line fractionally faster in a moment that would invoke memories of the Brownlee brothers finishing in Mexico 2016, truly astonishing.
Finaly the junior boys 4 x 100m team would crown off a fantastic day with gold in the relay!
We wait, patiently, to find out if the Junior Boys team will progress to the next round having been the most successful unit on the day.
