Physics in Action

Recently, our 37 Lower Sixth Physicists travelled to the Emmanuel centre on Marsham Street opposite the Home Office in central London.  This stunning auditorium was originally built as a large circular evangelical worship hall, with large gold lettering to side of the stage spelling out words taken from John’s gospel, “I am come so that they might have life, and have it more abundantly”.

The day was chaired by the BBC’s Greg foot with lectures including learning about Neutrinos from UCL’s Professor Jonathan Tennyson, as well as the Coriolis force from Simon Clark, one of the new breed of YouTuber science communicators. Warwick’s Prof. Rachel Edwards gave a more engineering related talk on the use of Ultrasound in the safety-testing of railway tracks and finally there was a panel discussion on careers in Physics and Engineering, as well as a session giving sage advice on how to achieve top A-level grades.

Gabriella, from Year 12, reflected on this day: “It was good to see all the different routes into Physics careers how different parts of Physics can link together, for example we heard from a researcher working on atmospheric Physics and I could see how that linked to the lecture on the Coriolis effect.  This was especially interesting for me, as I also study Geography”.

This insightful day not only broadened our students’ understanding of Physics but also showcased the exciting possibilities within the field.
