The Good Schools Guide Review: The school where ‘every child can be who they are, and they are embraced for who they are.’

We are delighted to share The Good Schools Guide’s glowing new review of Eltham College Junior School, published this week.

The Good Schools Guide reviews some 1300 schools nationally, both state and independent, and is a highly respected source of information and independent opinion. Its editors personally select which schools they include on merit, visiting featured schools in person, viewing lessons across a wide range of year groups and interviewing students and teachers as well as the Head. Behind the scenes, they also speak to current and former parents.

Following her visit, our reviewer praises the Junior School for its thoughtful approach to education, where children are nurtured and encouraged to be curious. She highlights the school’s exceptional facilities, including the science lab with ‘brightly coloured acrylic tables shaped like amoebae’ and the beautifully inclusive and flexible uniform.

The music programme is described as having ‘exploded’ recently, with most pupils playing ‘at least’ one instrument and enjoying opportunities to perform in choirs, orchestras, and ensembles. The review also commends the drama department’s productions, which give pupils of all levels a chance to shine, including backstage roles for budding technicians.

Pastoral care is described as ‘always good, constantly evolving,’ with pupils supported by wellbeing groups, open-door medical facilities, and clear communication between parents and staff. The school’s focus on responsibility, respect, resilience, readiness, and relationships is highlighted, with pupils describing the environment as supportive and free of bullying.

Summing up, she writes that this is a school where ‘every child can be who they are, and they are embraced for who they are.’

We are incredibly proud of this recognition and grateful to all the parents who shared their insights with the reviewer.
