Exploring Modernism: A Talk by Edmund Cavendish
Written by Dr Neil Croally, Head of Scholarship at Dulwich College
On Monday 13 January Edmund Cavendish addressed a group of students from Dulwich College and James Allen’s Girls’ School on the topic of Modernism as part of their Postmodernism course.
The talk covered modernism in all its variety, from the art of Duchamp and Kandinsky, through the architecture of Le Corbusier and the tropical modernists, to the jazz of Louis Armstrong and the poetry and prose of – inter alia – Gertrude Stein, T.E. Eliot, James Joyce and Franz Kafka. Edmund’s talk stimulated an energetic debate on the definition and merits of modernism and was much enjoyed by all.
