Some pupils join us who are already learning instruments and they join ensembles relevant to their instrument and level.
Other pupils join us who have never had the opportunity to learn an instrument. These pupils benefit from our MUSIC ALIVE programme for complete beginners.
In Year 3, the MUSIC ALIVE programme gives pupils the chance to have free lessons on a stringed instrument (violin, viola, cello, double bass or harp) and be a part of a String ensemble as well as having individual lessons. After the trial period of about a month, pupils wishing to take up their instrument continue to benefit from free instrument hire for the remainder of that academic year whilst paying for lessons beyond the trial period. Those who wish to discontinue can do so with no obligation.
In Year 4, the MUSIC ALIVE programme gives pupils the chance to learn a Brass or Woodwind instrument in the same way as above.
Each Lent term we hold an Inter House Music Competition which is open to all pupils learning an instrument, either at School or privately.
Individual tuition takes place throughout the school day on a rotational basis, with no fixed times. Timetables are displayed on SOCS. Tuition is available on the following instruments/voice:
